Tetanus Tsunami-related - Indonesia

In Aceh there are at least five patients with tetanus admitted in the public hospital. At this stage we have no clearer idea of case numbers, nor of deaths from this disease. There is also a shortage of tetanus immune globulin in the area.

Typhoid Fever - Gabon (Woleu-Ntem)

An unprecented outbreak of typhoid fever has been confirmed in the northern forests of Gabon, causing one death so far, national radio announced.

Around 50 cases of the water borne disesease have been reported over the past month in Oyem, a town of 35.000 people located near the northern border with Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon, following repeated breakdowns of the local water supply system.

Hepatitis E - India (Mumbai)

Winter is usually the time for viral infections, but this year there is a worrying and unusual yellow tinge in the city's healthscape. Hepatitis E virus infection - with its visible trademark, jaundice - is sweeping across the city's southern peninsula. What is even more worrying is that public experts have not been able to locate the outbreak's source. 93 people died of the disease in 2004 - almost the double number for 2003.

Malaria, resistant - India

The malaria parasit is increasingly becoming resistant to chloquine, and incidence of deadly falciparum is on the rise in the country, suggesting a reappraisal of the tratment approach, so that a combination of drugs is used rather than only chloroquine, scientists said here.

A study at the Indian Institute of Science in which 73 samples were analysed showed that 95 percent of malaria cases were resistant to chloquine, Dr. Padmanabhan, Hony Professor at the Indian Institute fo Science told a plenary lecture on "Scientific Challanges in Compating Malaria".

Typhoid in Tajikistan

More than 50 people including 40 children have contracted typhoid fever in southwestern Tajikistan and have been hospitalised, a health ministry official reported. All the cases wre recorded in the village of Kolkhozabad, some 120 km south of the capital Dushanbe, the official told AFP, adding that a nearby pond may be contaminated.

Sleeping sickness in eastern Uganda

December 13, 2004

At least nine people were killed in an outbreak of sleeping sickness in Katakwi district, some 240 km notheast of the Uganda capital Kampala, The New Vision reported. Local official Geoffrey Okaka was quoted by the state-owned newspaper as saying that 27 adults had been admitted to Lwala Hospital. He added that the health ministry of the country has given the district 2000 tsetse fly traps, the insect that transmits the often fatal disease. In August of this year sleeping sicness broke out in Kaberamaido district, bordering Katakwi, people having died in that outbreak

HEPATITIS A, RESTAURANT RELATED - CANADA (BRITISH COLUMBIA):

As many as 900 people could have been exposed to hepatitis A while visiting an upscale Kelowna restaurant, the Interior Health Authority announced on Wed 13 Oct 2004. Dr. Leila Srour, the Okanagan's Medical Officer of Health, announced that a female food worker at Kelowna's My Martini Place was diagnosed on Tue 12 Oct 2004 with hepatitis A virus infection, and could have been contagious since 15 Sep 2004. "We are alerting the patrons of the restaurant who ate or drank at the restaurant from 28 Sep to 5 Oct 2004 to have hepatitis A vaccinations as soon as possible," Srour said, estimating about 400 people were in the restaurant during that time, and adding that free vaccines are available for anyone affected.

Cholera in Chad

1 September 2004

A total of 2,046 cases of Cholera and 98 deaths (case fatality rate, 4.8%) have been reported from 14 June to 22 August 2004 in Western Chad, some distance from the refugee camps in the east of the country. The outbreak started in Massaguet (Hadjar Lamine) North of N'Djaména; from there it spread to Lac and Kanem provinces as well as to the capital city N'Djaména. The previous week a total of 453 new cases occurred in N'Djaména.

Cholera in Cameroon

15 June 2004

WHO has received reports from the Ministry of Health of a total number of 2924 cases and 46 deaths in Cameroon from 1 January to 9 June 2004 in Littoral and West Regions. Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor has been laboratory confirmed. The outbreak, which was under control in Douala town in the Littoral region in March has started again with the onset of the rainy season in early June.

Tick-borne Encephalitis - Russia ( Krasnoyarsk)

The last 10 days of May have seen a peak in tick activity. According to the News Agency agency "Press Line" an average of 60 ticks per kilometer have been recorded along trails in the "Stolbi" nature reserve in the Krasnoyarsk region. The number of people seeking medical attention for tick bites has risen to 2411. 43 people have been hospitalized with a preliminary diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis virus infection. So far 26 people registered in the Krasnoyasrk region have a confirmed diagnosis of tick-borne encephalitis virus infection.

HEPATITIS - INDIA (GUJARAT)

Despite the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) taking all precautionary measures to prevent the spread of jaundice, 4 more cases were reported in the city on Wed 5 May 2004. 3 of them were in areas where no cases had been reported till now, while the 4th case was in Amraiwadi. Official estimates put the number of jaundice-affected patients in Amraiwadi, Bhaipura, New Bhavaninagar at 120. AMC officials also suspect that many cases in the eastern part of the city may be going unreported, as those afflicted may be going to private practitioners.

More Sleeping Sickness Cases In Kwanza-Norte. Some 41 new cases of sleeping sickness have been recorded at Lukala District in the Northern Kwanza-Norte Province, from January to March 2004, killing 2 people among 570 diagnosed cases within the ambit of the project "Angotrip". According to the Director of the centre for the treatment of the sickness, Mbiavanga Eduardo Alves, 30 people received treatment during this period.

In the last quarter of 2003, about 7000 people were examined, with 181 found to be positive. The local centre can accommodate 60 inpatients and works with 13 technicians.

Hepatitis E Virus - India (West Bengal)

23-04-2004

More than 800 persons have been infected with hepatitis E virus in South Dum Dum in West Bengal, India, during the past 3 weeks. The affected areas are Chasipara, Lalgarh, Moyrapara, Azadgarh, Burmanpara, Sethbagan, Chasirmat, Goalabagan, Basakbagan, and Swamiji colony of the Municipal areas of South Dum Dum. The outbreak appears to be due to contamination of the water supply in the affected areas. The main manifestation was jaundice. Although at least 15 relapse cases were reported in Moyrapara, Azadgarh, and Goalabagan areas, there was no report of any death from the disease.

The legionellosis epidemic, which struck Pas-de-Calais (France) and affected a total of 86 people and caused 17 deaths, was confirmed by the prefecture of the department. "17 people died, 3 are still hospitalized, and 66 recovered", specified the official statement of the prefecture.

Nigeria: Lassa fever outbreak reported in Edo State

LAGOS : An outbreak of Lassa fever, an acute viral illness of 1 to 4 weeks duration caused by Lassa virus has been reported in Nigeria's midwestern state of Edo, the local press indicated on Mon 9 Feb 2004. Reports said two patients had been confirmed dead at the Specialist Teaching Hospital in Irrua, Edo state while several others were suspected to have died without going to hospital for treatment. The epidemic is said to have affected the northern part of the state, including Ekpoma, Igarra and Ibilo.

Precautions for Travel to Countries Reporting Avian Influenza A

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) within the Department of Health and Human Services has issued precautions for travel to countries that are reporting outbreaks of avian influenza A (H5N1) in humans and animals. The purpose of these precautions is to provide information for travelers on the status of avian influenza A (H5N1) outbreaks, including where outbreaks are occurring, measures to take before travel, precautions to follow while abroad, and what to do if illness occurs during or after travel. Currently, CDC does not recommend that the general public avoid travel to any of the countries affected by avian influenza A (H5N1).
