Relapsing Fever
Bacteria known as spirochetes, Borrelia recurrentis , closely related to the organisms that cause Lyme disease cause relapsing fever. The bacteria may be transmitted to humans by either ticks or lice. The disease occurs in Ethiopia, Sudan and in South America.
Manifestations: T he illness is characterised by periods of:
Fever Chills Headaches Body aches Muscle aches Cough Alternating with periods when the fever subsides and the person feels relatively well.
Diagnose and treatment: D iagnose is demonstrated on blood test. Treatment is available.
Prevent relapsing fever by:
use of repellents protective clothing when exposed prompt detection and removal of arthropods on clothing and skin Attention to hygiene. use of bednet
