Mycoplasma pneumonia (atypical pneumonia) is a tracheobronchitis. The atypical pneumonia is caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which is a small microorganism lying between categories of bacteria and viruses. Person-to-person transmission by contact with respiratory secretions. Persons of all ages are at risk but rarely children less than 5 years old. Outbreaks are common among young adults, especially in crowded military and institutional settings.

Persistent cough is common during convalescence, other sequelae are rare. Fatal cases are reported occationally, primary among the elderly.
